‘fawn’

2023, acrylic on canvas, lace, ribbon, faux fur, wallpaper, (101.6cm x 76.2cm)

Inspired by Isabelle Alberquerque’s ‘Orgy for ten people in one body, 5’ (2020), my painting ‘Fawn’ looks at notions of hybridity and anthropomorphism. In particular the piece places emphasis on the relationship between woman and deer, a recurring comparison within beauty trends and gender expectations, also alluding to hyper sexualisation of women through the animal. The work further discusses femininity through colour palette, domestic materials, lace, ribbon and female body parts, fusing this with aspects of the deer to convey notions of performed femininity, the naturalisation of gender and female sexuality. I further expanded this by intervening in polished bodily representations of women and female nudes within art history. I particularly focus on the surface of the skin, mimicking and recreating wounds, blemishes and acne, aspects of the skin typically associated with the masculine. These details and textures are thus added in order to juxtapose the sexual with the abject.
